5th graders learn all about sustainable farming
Preview by Liora Susswein

This year in the fifth grade classroom the students are diving deep into the intriguing topic of sustainability.

On Fridays, the fifth graders are volunteering at Green Gate Farm, a certified organic farm, in order to better their understanding of sustainability. Teacher Karen Hidalgo said, “The kids are going to learn about how a farm runs, community supported agriculture and we are going to be looking at a lot of different things with food, how to make healthy snacks using solar energy.”

The farm has recently built a solar powered kitchen that the students will be able to use.

Along with sustainability, the fifth grade class has designed and created backpacks for the homeless that are waterproof and easily transportable. They have also done a plethora of projects, such as one on their ideal leader where they made a stop motion video about that leader. They also did a project called “History Repeats Itself,”  where they compared a modern day event to an event in that took place in the American Revolution.

When you walk past the fifth grade classroom, you might see them doing a probability game, a science experiment, reading groups and so much more. The fifth grade experience is always changing and you never know what's just around the corner.
